Nine run fifth leads Thunderbirds past Toronto 9-7
The Hamilton Thunderbirds scored nine runs in the fifth inning – eight unearned – to edge the Toronto Maple Leafs by the score of 9-7 Friday night at Bernie Arbour Stadium.
Toronto coasted into the fifth inning with a 2-0 lead. Starter Drew Taylor, working his way back from arm problems, tossing three shutout innings. He was replaced by Jake Gallo who pitched a scoreless fourth but was promptly hammered in the fifth and didn’t survive the inning allowing nine runs, one earned, on six hits for the loss.
Hamilton's Doug Chrysler recorded his first victory of the season after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits over six innings of work. Nino Fasulo picked up the save in relief.
Chris Piano had two of Hamilton’s nine hits, a single and a triple, and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Thunderbirds.
The Leafs Rob Gillis hit a three-run homer and added a double, while Raul Borjas had four singles, a run scored and an RBI. Brian Ivan added a pair of hits in the loss.
